Chet Matthews, the owner of the Samuel Reed Home, contacted me recently. Today, my son Ian and I are going to Blackville to meet Chet, tour the home, and learn all we can.
Here are some pictures Chet has sent already of before and after the restoration done in 1997-98. More pictures and info coming soon!
What an incredible looking restoration. Did Chet Matthews do the restoration? It's just great that either he or someone else was willing to spend the time, effort, and money restoring such a historic old home rather than razing it and starting over. I can't wait to hear more about Mr. Matthews and this wonderful home.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe my ancestor's house is still standing!!! Wow!
ReplyDeleteI am the second daughter of George Byron Reed IV, Kira Reed Wild.
The home is just beautiful, and I am so thankful it belongs to someone who has so lovingly restored it. I am still not exactly sure where I am in the family. I am the daughter of Kennerly Corbett, son of Leroy and Essie Kennerly Corbett. My Ggrandfather was Robert Lawrence Corbett Married to Lula Reed who died young. My Grandmother Essie was descended from Jeremiah Jones through her GMother, Sallie. On my mother's side i am the GChild of Seigler/Gantt from New Holland area. Both sides of my family settled that area in the 1700's. Brenda Corbett Haile, Johns Island, SC
ReplyDeleteBrenda,
ReplyDeleteYou are my 5th cousin twice on the Reed side and on the Jones line!
Lula Thira Reed was a daughter of James W. & Anna Rebecca Tyler Reed. James's father was Hugh. And, of course, Hugh's parents were Samuel & Mary Reed. This makes Samuel and Mary your 4-great-grandparents. (Thanks to our 5th cousin Henry Singer for info on Lula.)
Your grandmother Essie's grandmother Sallie was a granddaughter of Jeremiah Jones. Jeremiah is our 4-great-grandfather.
