  1. First of all, thank you, Marilyn, for starting this blog.

Like my 5th cousin Marilyn, my paternal line reaches back to Sam & Mary. That Marilyn & I share the same last (maiden) name after all these generations makes it seem a much closer relationship.

    Here goes:

    >>>Tullie Washington Reed & Katie Thompson
    >>>>Laurie Tully Reed & Lula Mae Forehand

  2. Josie, thank you for commenting! I agree about our connection. Never underestimate the power of a Reed girl!

How appropriate you should be the first to comment. You're the first contact I made regarding my Reed branch. In fact, you're the one who led me to Samuel & Mary! I'll always be grateful.

  14. Dear "Cuz" Marilyn, My sister(Kay Ellen Thomas Hoyle) snd I(Dorothy Virginia Thomas Boucher) are the two daughters of Frederick Bendal Thomas and Lilah Kathryn Reed Thomas. My mother was Elizabeth Reed Hudlow's sister. There were 4 girls and 1 boy born to my grandfather and grandmother. My grandfather's name was Norman McCloud Reed, Sr. My nickname that Pappy(my grandfather) gave me is "Dixie". But there are 2 stories as to why, lol. There is so much to absorb here, I can't believe it. We are thrilled to have found both Josie and you. Thanks for all your effort. I never knew I was Irish!!!! I thought I was just a "southern" girl at heart. Dixie Boucher

  19. Hi! I was wondering if the Hartzog/Reed/Waters cemetery is easily accessible or not. We'll be in SC visiting relatives, and I was thinking about making a detour to see my ancestors!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hi, Garrett. This cemetery is not accessible due to the fact that it is on private land behind a locked gate. Please contact me at samuelreedfamilyATgmailDOTcom for further information. Also, I would love to know who your ancestors are and when you will be in SC. Maybe we could meet up!

    Greetings,
Today, Mary Claire, John, Jim and I made a drive to several old places and a wish to visit the grave of my great grandfather, John Wiley Reed. Jim is interested in photography and is part of SC Ramblings group.
We traveled from the Fitts home in Gaston toward Poole’s Mill. Grandmother Reed’s house is totally overgrown so that we did not get a picture. Ebenezer Church where Grandmother played is now a new brick building with Sunday School building attached and faces Hwy. 178. The church dates from 1792. There is a monument across Hwy. 3 to several Jeffcoats that donated land for the church and notes a man who saved it from being burned in 1865. The E. A. Poole store still stands in good condition but vacant. Of course, the Poole’s Mill Dam broke many years ago.
Jim took a picture where Hugh Whetstone once had a cotton gin on Hwy 3 in Aiken County. It was burned when a truck backfired. Then we traveled on to the town of Springfield, to Blackville, and on to Healing Springs where we ate lunch at a Mennonite Deli Store. After lunch, we went to the artesian Healing Spring on the acre owned by God and collected water. John and Anne purchased local squash and sweet potatoes from a woman selling local produce.
Next we found the grave of my (and Mary Claire’s) great grandfather, John Wiley Reed (May 4, 1828 to Oct. 9, 1909), and his brother, James H. Reed (Feb. 18, 1825 to March 17, 1901). They are buried on either side of their mother, Julia F. Odom Reed (July 30, 1802 to Sept. 16, 1883). These are three of eight graves in a cyclone fence enclosure in the middle of a field that currently has a crop of melons. The coordinates for the Reed-Odom Cemetery are 33.436329 and -81.264889 which is just off Gardenia Road. The other grave on the front row is Ellen E. Aldridge (Oct. 1835 to Oct. 28, 1902)
The four graves on the second row are Henry N. Kemp (Dec. 12, 1854 to Jan 23, 1918); Martha Reed (March 10, 1844 to Jan. 5, 1928); Cornelius Birt (Nov. 12, 1862 to June 30, 1879); and Christopher C. Birt (Jan. 26, 1859 to Oct. 10, 1869).
We pulled up by the cemetery so all could see the front row of graves and cut some vines on the path to the gate.
We then traveled to Perry and made pictures of several old stores, one of which may have belonged to our aunt, Rosalee Whetstone Blizzard. We passed through Wagener and drove down Lake Amelia Road to the home of Malcolm (our first cousin) and Kathy Davis Rawls. Not finding anyone at home, we returned to the Fitts home.

Thank you so much for your blog. I've been searching for info on Isaiah W. Hair, who I know served in the Civil War (I have a copy of letters he wrote to Julia.) Up until today, and stumbling upon your blog, I did not have Julia's parents identified on Family Search. Now I have some names to use. THANK YOU!

  26. I am a descendent of Reed, it is believed that my Great Great Grand parents were enslaved by Samuel and Mary Reed. My Great Great Grand parents son was sold to a man by the name of John Clarkson in Wateree SC by the name of Daniel Reed I am not a blood relative of Samuel and his wife I am related to the enslaved African whom he owned and had to take on the Reed name which is how we got the name REED... I am trying to find out who they were.. Thank you
